Jesus Taught Me Karate Dojo Beating Cold Case Closed

The Washington Post today has a great article explaining the truth behind the controversial "Jesus Taught Me Karate Dojo Beating" video that has gone viral.

The video, shot at the Dojo of a former marine named Bobby Joe Blythe, in the early 80's in Dumfries, Virginia, apparently shows the brutal murder of a mentally retarded man who claims Jesus taught him Karate. Blythe instructs one of his students to 'teach him a lesson' and boy do they ever.

But in an incredible series of events the video and its insane popularity led police in Hanford, California (where Blythe now resides) to suspect Blythe and the black belt of murder and open up a 'cold case!'

However the Post reports today that the man is not dead, but was simply beaten half to death as it were. A local Dumfries cop told the Post he saw the man in the days after the brutal beating.

"You could tell he had been beaten severely," Feldbush said. "He wasn't very cooperative and didn't want to pursue charges."

So the "cold case" is closed.

But it's still pretty sick that they beat this guy near death for fun in a Karate Dojo in Dumfries Virginia of all places. Watching too much Karate Kid, I suppose.

If anything this just proves that as long as the cameras are rolling you can never ever escape justice. Even nearly 30 years later. I'm sure everyone involved in this video never expected to see this type of reaction. Internet wins again.

UPDATE: It turns out Bobby Joe Blythe was the YouTube user who posted the video in the first place! When the response got too much for him to handle he deleted his YouTube account but it was too late. The video, and his comments had been posted all across the internet.

UPDATE II: International news has caught on. France 24 reports that in a "first for the internet" hackers discovered the identities and personal information (addresses, phone numbers, rap-sheets) of all the parties involved in this video (including the black belt student, Willie Dennis) tipped off local, state and federal authorities, and posted this information on message boards across the internet.

The guilty parties scrambled to delete their Facebook and Myspace pages only to have the archived pages posted as jpeg versions.

On Fire Retrospective: George W. Bush

The death of Ted Kennedy has brought Kennedy's biographer Adam Clymer into the news again, which reminded me of the first incident that signaled George W. Bush's On Fire potential. September 5, 2000:
The Republican presidential candidate George W Bush has said he regrets the fact that people heard him make an insulting comment about a journalist, but he refused to apologise.

Just before a campaign speech in Illinois, Mr Bush said to his running mate Dick Cheney: "There's Adam Clymer, major league asshole from the New York Times."

Mr Bush later said he did not realise that live microphones were going to pick up the remark, but he stopped short of an actual apology.

Time to step up Barack Obama. Time to step up.

IDEA: International Dialects of English Archive

The Maryland House, a service area "destination" 24 miles north of Baltimore on I-95, is a rite of passage for anyone from the mid-Atlantic United States. Those from this region have an unhealthy relationship with this rest stop, interrupting their travels for far too much time here for no reason. However, it's also a strange crossroads of the nation, where one may see natives of states mostly from Virginia to New York. It is here where I encountered a most intriguing accent on a woman.

She had a twang of a Southerner with the briskness of someone from the North. In my non-linguist estimation, the Maryland House is the pivot point for some of the country's heaviest accents.

Check out IDEA's website (link below). You can hear a variety of Americans speaking; the site is broken up into numerous intrastate dialects.

Normally I wouldn't just share a link on the site, but this article about Bill Simmons' trip to Estadio Azteca last week for the World Cup qualifier between the U.S. and Mexico is a fantastic read.

Insensitive Bathroom Art I Saw at a Sushi Place Last Night

Found at One Greene in Brooklyn. The photo does not do justice to the actual size of the offending artwork, which stares at you while you're trying to piss.
